We were commissioned by the National University of Ireland, Galway to undertake the Civil and Structural engineering consultant design of an extension to the Martin Ryan Institute. It is located on a high profile site adjacent to the existing Martin Ryan Institute building, which is near to both the University campus entrance and a protected canal. Numerous design options were explored by our team to accommodate the budgetary restrictions, and also, to incorporate several brief requirements into the final design namely: The inclusion of an 80-student undergraduate teaching laboratory, a 165-seated tiered lecture theatre, research laboratories with associated write-up/study areas, and a large 50-seated meeting room. The final design solution implemented was a 1,620 sq.m structure consisting of a long-span steel frame and composite steel beams with metal decking incorporated into the services zone.
